As a professor and biomedical scientist, specialized in inflammatory skin disease, I have never used animals for my research, I have always sought an alternative way to answer to my research questions. With the right mindset and the right network, it really is possible. I really think when an animal alternative is available, or can be developed, it should be used.

As a funder I find it important to support research using the best predictive model to find new or better treatments for the patients.
Carine van Schie
When I was first asked to intervene in the field of biomedical research involving animal testing I was reluctant to accept. I was tempted to just look away. Once I got involved I noticed the tension between those involved with animal testing and those against it. They didn’t really talk to each other. Meanwhile nobody seemed to feel responsible for our animal testing practices. I believe the more people know about animal testing practices and the more people know about animal free research practices, the easier it becomes to take responsibility and consciously decide what research method to use.
